What Is a Kicker?
In gambling – particularly poker – a kicker is a side card used to break ties between players who hold the same hand rank. It often determines the winner when the main hand combinations are equal.
Kicker Example in Poker
If two players have a pair of Kings:
- Player A: K♠ K♦ 10♣ 7♠ 4♦
- Player B: K♣ K♥ 9♠ 6♣ 2♠
Both have a pair of Kings, but Player A’s highest remaining card is a 10, while Player B’s is a 9. The 10 is the kicker, making Player A the winner.

In hands like straights or flushes, kickers usually don’t apply since the ranking is determined by the five-card hand itself.
